presents Dragon Cup Badminton Championships 2008 Sunday 6th July 2008. Calamvale Community College, Hamish Street, Brisbane. (President's report 7th July 2008) The 2008 Dragon Cup Badminton Championships concluded with a big success. We had a total of 157 entries, making it the biggest Dragon Cup to date! We must first thank our sponsors – AMart Allsports, Redbull, Alan & Allen, Betta Electronics, Webster World of Fitness, Metro Buzz Stop Café, Rebel Sports, Mitre 10, So delicious, Yonex Australia, Carlton, Winex, Yang Yang, Racket Sports, World News Weekly, Queensland Asia Business Weekly, Queensland Chinese News and the Bridge Magazine. Without the sponsors' support, the event would not have been possible. The appearance of the Red Bull girls giving away free Redbull was certainly a treat and high light of the day. Our professional photographer captured over 1000 pics and they will be posted here shortly. Next we must thank the support of the competitors, for without your entries, our event would not have been possible. It was very pleasing to see so many familiar faces, and we thank the UQ Club for bringing their team, the Southside Club as well as the Southport Club. It was just amazing to see so many people at the same event, enjoying what we all love - playing badminton. An event of such calibre is the hard work of all our voluntary members, staff, coaches, squads and other helpers. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who helped out, from preparation to the executing of the tournament, and the packing and cleaning up after. Without your help, the event would not have been as successful as it was. Special thanks to Judy, Peter and Howie at the control desk who did a smashing job, Trudy had all entries and rego down pat, Ramon and Danny for getting the trophies and prizes in order, Oi Hung & Anna kept the kitchen and the free food service totally transparent, Terry who was our groundsman keeping our windows covered and toilets filled up toilet rolls! Special thanks for Karen too who was our guest helper at the control desk, and Johnny who spent many hours with the tournament software. Last but not least, I would like to thank Mr Bryan Iles (ex-QBA president for nearly 20 years) for his support and participation at the event, and the guest appearance of Australia ex-National Coach Mr Sze (also father and coach of ex-World Champion Mr Sze Yu) for his show of support and encouraging gratitude. Thank you all for your continuous support and encouragement, and we certainly hope to see every one of you, with even more participants at the next Dragon Cup in 2012. Our last 3 Dragon Cups were held every 3 years (2002, 2005 and now 2008), but as we fall on the same year as the Olympics this year, we have decided to hold all future Dragon Cups in line with the ultimate event, to make our event even more special and prestigious. So the next Dragon Cup will be held in 2012, then 2016 and so forth. Dragon Cup 2012 is planned to be held back at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Boondall, with 13 courts in action. Well done to all the people who won your event, but even if you did not win a trophy or plate, I hope we have given you a great experience of what a tournament is all about, and you gained plenty of knowledge and enjoyment from the day. Well done Wesley Caulkett in taking the Dragon Cup 2008, and extra congratulations in winning the Gold Coast Open Open Mens Singles titles last weekend, taking our ex-Queensland Champion Ben Lee. Well done also Brian Chen and Alvin Jiang, who gave Wesley a good run for his money. I was well impressed with some players I haven't seen play for 3 years - such as Mitchell Wheller and Christina Chan. Well done Danny Zhong who won the President's Cup. Danny has shown the best effort and improvement in the tournament and has a great future in front. I would also like to mention the tremendous effort I saw with a few juniors - Tim Hojnik, Lachlan Boustead, Keith Lo, Joseph Gilland, Amy Chanh, Hirushi & Nimnaka Weerasena, Gerard Lai, Roseline & Brendon Sun, Geoff Xu, Janet Yuen, Simon Leung, Johnny Gian, Zac Morris, Arvin Brown, Julian Lam, Reece Wong, Ka Yin Yau, Eugene Fong, Jordan Harvey, Chris Goeldner. I think we have a great future with these young stars. Once again, I thank you all for your support and participation to the 2008 Dragon Cup Badminton Championships. See you all again in 2012! Patrick G Kotwall, President, Dragon Badminton Club.
